The McLaren MCL-HY completed its first public laps with reigning Formula 1 World Champion Lando Norris at the wheel of the V6 turbo-powered LMDh. The prototype is engineered to fight for victories in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the Le Mans 24 Hours starting in 2027. Norris piloted the car up the 1.16-mile hillclimb at the Duke of Richmond’s estate twice during Friday's schedule at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
This appearance marks a major milestone on the British Hypercar's journey toward the 2027 endurance classic. Following several weeks of private testing behind closed doors, the prototype stepped into the open air to meet motorsport fans. McLaren Racing admitted the public outing arrived remarkably early in the vehicle's lifespan, given that the physical development programme is only in its tenth week following a digital reveal on 4 May 2026.
McLaren Hypercar Team Principal James Barclay explained that the marquee automotive gathering was initially an ambitious target. Barclay noted that the appearance was lightly pencilled into schedules because of the tight timeline. However, the engineering crew successfully hit every milestone on and off the track, prompting a last-minute decision to divert the MCL-HY to the event for two of the four days.
Beneath the bodywork, the prototype relies on a twin-turbocharged V6 engine built to handle the rigorous demands of the Hypercar category. The development team faces a steep climb to master the complex balance of raw power, reliability, and stint efficiency required in endurance racing. The car represents McLaren's first dedicated bid for overall victory at Le Mans since the legendary F1 GTR secured a historic triumph on its debut attempt back in 1995.
More than three decades after that watershed moment, the Woking-based manufacturer is preparing to re-enter top-tier endurance racing. When the MCL-HY joins the grid in 2027, it will step into a fiercely competitive Hypercar field featuring established manufacturers including Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, Ferrari, Ford, Genesis, Peugeot and Toyota.
Once the weekend's demonstration runs conclude, the prototype will immediately return to closed-circuit testing to resume its intensive development roadmap. With a full year remaining before its planned race debut, the McLaren project has only just begun to reveal its potential on the global stage.
